How many illustrations have been created by how many artists in the 140 years covered by the museum's collections? Certainly at least 10 million drawings and paintings were created by no fewer than 10,000 to 15,000 artists and probably many more. When one considers that those 10 million images were each reproduced between 100,000 and 3 million times (depending on the circulation of the magazine in which they appeared) and that each magazine was looked at by at least four people, the resulting astronomical number makes it clear that illustration has played a vital role in shaping the visual history and taste of America.
